EDTECH 501: Digital Inequality

The assignment of digital divide and inequality was very informative and really lends itself towards gaining perspective of technology use and availability worldwide. I feel really fortunate to have the resources of technology available to me in my current educational setting. As I learned in this assignment, access to technology resources is only one aspect of inequality. I will take this new knowledge and understanding of digital inequality and introduce it to my department at our next meeting when we collaborate about current educational issues within our school.

I have included a narrated video and the embedded Google presentation with speaker notes.

  1. I liked the simplicity of your slide presentation. Too often I see slides that are packed with text and nothing else. You did a good job demonstrating the right way to do a presentation. I like how you highlighted the fact that once you have access to hardware, there are still problems with a lack of skills to use the technology. I sympathize with your lack of leadership in your school, and agree that using what we have can go a long way in helping to ease the digital divide.

What did you think of screencast-o-matic? I used screenr, and thought it was good, but I didn't like having to do it in one take. Did screencast-o-matic allow you to narrate individual slides? I am going to try and do a screencast per unit next year, so I'm interested in your experiences with it.

  2. Chad, I agree with you completely, that the technology in our schools is often underutilized due in large part to a lack of professional development for teachers. And as you argue, if teachers are required to integrate technology into their lessons, after receiving proper training on how to do so, students will begin learning new digital skills, and the culture of the school will start to change.
